Legendary boxing promoter Frank Warren hailed 'The Pexican' Johnny Garton's sensational British welterweight title victory over Gary Corcoran last Saturday at Brentwood Centre, Essex as 'the fight of the year', writes Ziad Chaudry.

The likeable 31-year-old from Peckham stopped Wembley's Gary Corcoran in the eleventh round of this thrilling but bruising blooded encounter.

"That was fight of the year," said Warren who hopes to get his latest title winner out again either before Christmas or the New Year. "It was a magnificent fight and it took both of them to make the fight it was but Johnny put himself in pole position now he's British champion."

Millwall FC fan Garton thanked his stablemate at iBox Gym former title holder Battersea's-based Bradley Skeete for allowing him to achieve winning his biggest prize.

"This is beyond my wildest dreams," he said. "I'm full of emotions right now. I thank the team. My friend and stablemate Bradley Skeete vacated the belt so I can fight for it. I owe Bradley so much and it shows so much how good of a friend he is, I can't thank him enough."

Garton is co-trained at iBox Gym in Bromley by the respectable Alan Smith and Eddie Lam.

"Keeping the British belt in the stable makes it ten times better," Garton added. "Keeping it in South London is a personal thing to me. Now we got this belt at Millwall as well!"
