A tumultuous 12 months came to an end for Foley Boxing Club on Saturday night, with their annual dinner show coinciding with the announcement that the club had finally found a new permanent home.

This time last year, the club were on the ropes after the site of their Claygate-based headquarters were sold out from under them by landlords Youngs Brewery, to accommodate a 16-room hotel development.

But Youngs remained committed to helping Foley and a donation of £46,000 – presented last Saturday by Andy Nash to the club’s president Tommy Mills – will go a long way towards funding relocation to the Weston Green Sports Club in Kingston.

It was a fitting occasion to reveal that Foley’s future had been secured, with some bright young boxers carrying on the proud tradition of a club that has been producing talent for more than 40 years.

The first fight was between Foley’s Daly Diggins and Sam Keeley of Moulsecombe.

As it was not a carded contest, there was no winner, but both put on a spirited show and received a well-deserved ovation from the crowd.

The junior bout of the night was between the host club’s Mark Taylor and Bognor’s Jake Bennett.

Much of the three rounds was an old-fashioned, toe-to-toe clash.

Taylor finished with a bloodied nose but this did not deter him from producing a stunning combination of punches that earned him a unanimous decision.

Senior bout of the night was a rematch between Foley’s Tom Dawson and Adur’s Justin Vincent.

Having lost to Vincent last season, Dawson came out looking stronger and more focused after spending the start of the season in the gym, concentrating on his ring skills.

Having lost to Vincent last season, Dawson came out looking stronger and more focused after spending the start of the season in the gym, concentrating on his ring skills.

The Foley man took control of the centre of the ring for the first two rounds and unleashed a series of jabs and combination punches that got through Vincent’s defences.

Both fighters tired towards the end of the third but continued to put on a first-rate performance for the home crowd, Dawson winning with a majority score.

The boys will meet again at Adur’s show on December 4.
