NEW Eagles goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has been backed to get back into the England set-up following his move to the club.

Ex-England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain has suggested that there is "no reason why" the 29-year-old can not play for his country again.

Johnstone made the move from West Brom to Selhurst Park on Friday after his contract expired and Chamberlain believes he will be aiming for international recognition now he's back in the Premier League.

She told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast: "There's no reason why he can't have a place in the squad.

"Yes, he needs to be playing and I'm sure he's gone to Palace hoping he'll be the number one.

"But because of the dynamics of the goalkeeper position, there's so much room for change. One mistake can cause a keeper's form to spiral."

Despite some errors last season in the Championship, the Englishman was impressive in the Baggies' 2020-21 Premier League campaign and his first target will be to usurp Vicente Guaita as Palace's number one.

Guaita has been fantastic since joining Palace and will be a tough competitor for Johnstone, but should he succeed in becoming the club's number one then he will have every chance of making it in to the England team.

"If your manager trusts you, it's key," continued Chamberlain. "It's going to be difficult, but no-one is set in stone."
