It was another disastrous performance for Welling United as they were crushed at St. Albans City.

Shaun Jeffers scored a hat-trick in the first twelve minutes and Romeo Akinola scored a second half brace

In the third minute John Goddard sent Jeffers through and he lifted it over Murphy Mahoney and into the net. Four minutes later, Jeffers grabbed his second. A cross came into the box and Welling failed to clear it allowing Jeffers to fire home from close range.

Five further minutes had passed when St. Albans made it three. Goddard was adjudged to have been fouled in the area by Welling debutant Pepe Dylan. Jeffers stepped up and rifled the spot kick home.

Mitchell Weiss hit the side netting then Akinola headed wide from David Noble’s ball in.

At the other end, the best that Welling could manage was a Kristian Campbell free kick which clipped the wall but Michael Johnson saved easily.

Alex Lanshear sent in a dangerous low cross early in the second half that Mahoney pushed out to safety before Goddard took advantage of ponderous defending and the Welling keeper was again unable to hold it but Jeffers was unable to force it home.

Tom Bender headed wide from a corner before Welling came close when Stefan Ilic’s diagonal cross went just beyond Ben Allen at the far post.

Midway through the second period, St Albans added a disputed fourth. It appeared that Campbell had cleared Akinola’s effort of the line but the assistant referee signalled that it had crossed the line and a goal was awarded.

Akinola chipped a shot past the post before he completed the rout with a minute remaining when heading home Jeffers’ cross.

Manager Steve Lovell will be looking for a quick response when Concord Rangers visit Park View Road on Monday afternoon.
