Chelsea 3-3 Southampton: Blues denied a victory by Vestergaard heroics

Jannik Vestergaard's late equalizer gave Southampton a point away at Stamford Bridge. Timo Werner, Chelsea's star summer signing from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig scored two goals and it looked like a simplistic win for Frank Lampard’s side. However, Southampton’s star striker Danny Ings scored a 43rd minute goal to give the away fans some hope. In the second half, Southampton scored an equalizer. Che Adams scored in the 57th minute to make the score 2-2.

Then only a few minutes later, new Chelsea player Kai Havertz scored, restoring Chelsea’s lead. It looked for a while like Chelsea would run away with the three points as the minutes passed. But then, late drama happened. A poorly attempted clearance from a free kick left Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard to score with a header, levelling the scores right at the end of the game!

"He has to be strong enough mentally; that's the job we're in," was Frank Lampard’s comment when asked about the disastrous performance by Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea’s keeper who is not in good form at the moment.

Timo Werner cost Chelsea £54 million and it was very clear to see why Chelsea acquired him with his performance against Southampton. He played very well and was a constant threat to the Southampton defence, always creating chances. Hakim Ziyech made his first Chelsea appearance after being signed from Ajax.

Che Adams also assisted the goal for Danny Ings, making this game the first time he has assisted and scored a goal since Birmingham City’s game against Sheffield Wednesday in 2018.

The draw means that Southampton are in a mid table position and Chelsea are still in 6th, pushing for a Champions League place.
