Lee Bowyer has called for his Charlton side to improve in one area ahead of their crucial encounter with Luton Town on Saturday.

Following their 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers last weekend, the Addicks boss called upon his men to heed his advice at The Valley against a side just six-points below them.

“Take our chances,” were his instructions.

“If you create chances and don’t take them you’ll lose games.

“We need to polish up on taking those chances when we create them.

“We usually do but we need to make sure we do that on the weekend.

“That was the difference between the two teams last week.”

Bowyer was left frustrated in the aftermath of the Rovers defeat.

Goals by John Buckley and Tosin Adarabiayo gave the visitors three points which allowed three of the five teams below the Addicks to close the gap to five points between themselves in 19th and Wigan in 22nd.

With a week’s reflection however, Bowyer admitted despite being disappointed by the result, he did find some solace.

“Looking back there wasn’t much in it,” he continued.

“After conceding I thought we were the better team.

“We created chances second half, huffed n puffed, but didn’t take them.

“That’s what we need to improve on.

“Whenever you lose a game you’re not in a good place, it hurts.

“But when you come away from it, watch it back, there’s a lot of positives in it for me.

“The first 20 minutes we were a lot better than them, we just didn’t get that goal.”

Charlton changed from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3 in the second half, a move that prompted many believing Bowyer may stick with the latter for the Hatters, although the manager was coy into letting any tactical changes out the bag.

“There was an improvement in the second half, but the first 20 minutes we were good.

“People overthink the formation, if you do the right things it doesn’t matter what formation you play.

“The reason I changed it was because we needed to go for it a bit more.

“It worked but it didn’t work enough because we didn’t get anything from the game.”
