Andre Green’s goalscoring performance for Charlton against Barnsley had many Addicks comparing the attacker with a former forward.

Karlan Grant.

The likeness however is no coincidence according to Lee Bowyer, who admitted he saw the potential in the 21-year-old Aston Villa man of stepping away from his familiar wing position and playing through the middle.

Grant scored 14 goals in 28 appearances for the Addicks last season before then Premiership side Huddersfield snared the forward for a nominal fee in January.

His departure still hurts the Charlton manager but Bowyer is confident that Green is capable of making the switch from the wing.

“We did the same with Karlan and Jonathan Leko, both wingers, we moved them up top and they score goals,” Bowyer said of Green who has two goals in four appearances.

“Andre does the same.

“We tried to bring him (Green) in in the summer, I thought he could replace Karlan for me.

“He’s quick, he can finish, he’s good in one-v-one situations.

“But we have to work on his hold up play, that’s his weakness, it was Karlan’s too.

“His movement is very good and he’s settled into that role better than I thought he would and quicker, so I’m happy with him!”

Green was used as a wide-man for Aston Villa last season as they claimed promotion, and despite little game time in the first half of the campaign when he was loaned out to Preston, Bowyer saw enough of him to believe he could cut it up top.

“He’s scoring goals, everyone wants to score goals,” Bowyer continued.

“He’s a good winger, that’s why if we get him in one-v-one situations against the centre half it’ll be good for us.

“It’s easier than against a full back, centre backs aren’t as quick or mobile as a full back, and he goes past them easily!

“There’ll be times we ask him to play on the wing and when we do I’ve no doubt he’ll do the right things.”
