Here's how the Palace players rated in their 2-0 defeat to Southampton.

Vicente Guaita 6

Made a vital stop at 1-0 down from Stuart Armstrong’s deflected flick which kept Palace in the game as Saints dominated.

James Tomkins 5

Looked off the pace and failed to track his men, very un-Tomkins like. Shane Long had the beating of him but wasn’t punished by the Irishman. Frustration boiled over late on, picking up a yellow card for some ‘handbags’ with Nathan Redmond.

Gary Cahill 5

Not at his composed best as Southampton opted for speed in their attack with which the former Chelsea man struggled with. Made a number of last-ditch challenges but found the going tough.

Martin Kelly 5

Following Redmond inside allowing Bertrand to roam down the left, he was found out of position on more than one occasion. Like much of the back four, found it difficult.

Jairo Riedewald 4

Made a great double tackle in the first half which was hisn only highlight. Was very wasteful in possession however, wayward passing and looking long on too many occasions. Poor game.

This Is Local London:

James McArthur 6

Typical performance from the Scot. Up against a midfield far more confident in possession he found it tough. That said, there was little support ahead of him to defend from the front.

James McCarthy 7

Possibly Palace’s best player. Showed passion and hunger to get forward, urging his team to do likewise. May not have the creative spark others have, but had the fight to take it to Saints. Neat in possession, when Palace had it.

Cheikhou Kouyate 5

Outplayed in the middle of the park by a slick Saints midfield. Rarely used his pace and power to get forward and was hooked on the hour.

Jordan Ayew 6

Spent the majority of the first half tracking back as Saints retained possession. Second half he harried and hassled but couldn’t create, and lacked the pace to get in behind.

Wilfried Zaha 5

Starved of possession and doubled up on down the wing, found it hard to get into the game, but when he did he was by far Palace’s best threat, as usual. However, havign so little of the ball you sensed it was a matter of time before he boiled over. Targeted by fans and the Saints players, you sense frustartion got the better of him.

Cenk Tosun 5

Missed a guilt-edged opportunity to bag his first goal at Selhurst Park early in the first half that should’ve been bread and butter for a £27million striker.

SUBS:

Joel Ward 5

Stemmed the tide but couldn’t affect the game going forward.

Max Meyer 6

Neat and tidy but those infront of him offered little.

Connor Wickham 4

Had two chances, both spurned.
