Lee Bowyer said his side got what they deserved as Charlton fell to 10-man Derby County in their final game of the decade.

Teenager Jason Knight edged the hosts in front before Krystian Bielik was sent off for a reckless challenge on Conor Gallagher, reducing Derby to 10 men with just a quarter of an hour played.

But despite being a man up, the Addicks failed to take full advantage and ended up letting in a second when 19-year-old Knight wandered in unmarked at the back post for only his second-ever senior goal.

Lyle Taylor came off the bench at half-time for the injured Macauley Bonne, and gave the visitors a glimmer of hope with a late penalty, but Derby held onto their lead and even looked likely to score a third.

Bowyer said: "In my eyes, we should go on and win the game. We don't for a number of reasons.

"[We were] poor in possession, we didn't create anything. Nothing at all. Tell me if I'm wrong. Maybe the first shot we had on target was the penalty.

"Second half, until the penalty, we didn't even have a shot. We got ourselves into good areas out wide, tried to work it, get the overload out wide, get the crosses [into the box and] the crossing was poor. Our final ball was poor, all night long.

"We were patient, and we had to be at times, but the quality was very, very bad. Defensively, again, we've conceded another two goals. Credit to Derby, they deserved to win tonight.

"We weren't good enough, we got exactly what we deserved, and that was nothing. If we'd have got a late goal there [to equalise for 2-2] then it'd have been harsh."

The defeat comes as Charlton travel to play-off contenders Swansea City on January 2 to round off a gruelling turnaround of fixtures with an injury-hit squad.

Bowyer suggested the schedule could be having an effect but insisted his side should have performed better.

He added: "Again, does it come back to the amount of games that we're playing in and around this time [and because] we have no one to rotate? Maybe.

"But don't get out-battled, don't get outfought, and I thought we were second to everything tonight. If you do that, against a good side that can play as well, [Derby have] some good players, then you're going to lose the game.

"If anything is our strength then it's our fight and our togetherness and tonight we didn't do that.

"We'll have to dust them down and we've got another game in three days' time [against Swansea] and we can't let that happen again."
