Conor Gallagher could be a doubt for the trip to Derby County as Lee Bowyer confirmed Jonathan Leko is out for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old, who has impressed since joining on loan from Chelsea, was replaced by Ben Purrington in the second half of Charlton’s 3-2 victory over Bristol City on Boxing Day.

Bowyer said Gallagher could not continue after he “took a whack” to his hip and said he will be assessed over the next couple of days ahead of December 30.

It’s yet another injury blow for the Addicks as the knee injury Leko suffered at Queens Park Rangers will rule him out for both the rest of this campaign and part of the next one.

When asked about Gallagher, Bowyer said: “He struggled before the game, he ain't trained since the last game [against QPR]. He had a fitness test this morning, came through that okay, but then he got another whack on his hip.

“He tried to run it off but couldn't, so he had to come off. I don’t know [if he’ll be ready for Derby], all I know is we’re running out of players.”

He added: “He's got a knock, he's struggling. I don't know the seriousness of it. We'll have to see how he goes in the next couple of days.

On Leko, he said: “He jumped, landed, jolted his knee a bit [and from that] he's done his ACL. He's out for the rest of the season and going into next season.

“We've had four knee injuries between the start of the season and now, before Christmas. Four knee injuries. Like, you don't even get two in a season … he just landed funny.

“I feel sorry for the lad because he was doing well for us.”

Leko's loan deal will be cut short as Charlton search for someone to replace him in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Bowyer claimed he would be an “idiot” to play Lyle Taylor for another 90 minutes at Pride Park when Charlton visit Derby on December 30.

The striker, who was sidelined by a knee ligament injury he suffered while on international duty with Montserrat, completed 90 minutes for the second game in a row against Bristol City.

With Macauley Bonne the only senior striker available, it leaves Bowyer with a lack of options heading into a busy week of fixtures which is rounded off with a trip to play-off chasing Swansea City on January 2.

He added: “Lyle Taylor should never, ever be playing 90 minutes [after] 90 minutes. Never, ever. He's been out for 14 weeks.

“When you're out six weeks, in pre-season you have four or five games to build up to play 90 minutes. Lyle Taylor has just been chucked in. 'There you go, you have to play 90 minutes'. We have no players.

“Josh Davison on the bench, another young kid. What, do you take Lyle off when you're losing 2-1 with 20 minutes to go? The place would erupt!

“But if I don't rest him he's going to break down, 100 per cent. Then people say, 'Well why didn't you bring him off? I didn't bring him off because we need to win the games.

“I get that, I understand that, but I'd be an idiot to start Lyle Taylor next game - an idiot - or play him for another 90 minutes, because the longer he's going to go on the more [there is] a chance Lyle Taylor is going to break down and get injured.”
