Here’s how the Charlton players rated in their 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield.

Dillon Phillips 6

Made a routine stop in a first half and two better stops early in the second. Distribution much improved and seemingly banished the ‘error in waiting’ tag, a very solid keeper these days. Could do little for the goal.

Ben Purrington 6

A quiet first half but came alive in the second.  Got forward more frequently and offered a great outlet.

Tom Lockyer 7

Looked THE player who loved the wet conditions. Made a number of crunching tackles and telling headers. He seems to be the man who sets the tone for the side. Wisely took a booking to deny Karlan Grant a one on one.

Jason Pearce 6

Made a crucial block to bail out Sarr in the second half. One tackle Karlan Grant brought huge cheers.

Naby Sarr 4

Looked shakey in the air but made a number of vital intercepts. Showed nice footwork on occasions but prone to the overplaying.

Chris Solly 5

Similar to the Purrington he came alive in the second half and looked to have more freedom going forward. Dealt with Elias Kachunga well defensively in the opening half but his mistake proved costly late on.

Alfie Doughty 6

Looked confident and eager to impress. Got on the ball frequently in the first half and showed the fight Bowyer will need this season.

Conor Gallagher 6

Released pressure well but too often there were too few options for the midfielder to get an attack going. Got forward when he could but in Josh Cullen’s absence you sense he’s having to do a lot more defensively which isn’t his strongest attribute.

Darren Pratley 6

Shielded the backline without making too many tackles. Read the play well and slowed play down when needed. You feel his presence is going to be vital in this difficult spell.

Jonathan Leko 4

Pass the ball. When it comes off it’s fantastic, but too often he tries to do too much. Starting to look like a player playing for himself and not the team, you sense Bowyer won’t let him get away with that too long.

Macauley Bonne 5

Isolated up front with little service. Can’t recall him having a touch in the opening half. Leko’s unpredictability frustrated the marksman who looked to up his game after the introduction of Taylor.

SUBS:

Lyle Taylor 5

His introduction brought the biggest cheer of the night. His presence alone you feel gives his teammates around him a real lift.

James Vennings 5

Lost possession twice but always eager to get on the ball and wasn’t afraid to ‘get stuck in.’
