Charlton boss Lee Bowyer is keen for VAR to be introduced into Championship football after feeling aggrieved by his side’s 2-1 defeat at Luton Town on Tuesday night.

Controversial strikes from Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Izzy Brown deemed Jonathan Leko’s strike a consolation, but the Addicks boss feels neither of the home side’ goals would’ve stood if a Video Assistant Referee were in place.

Bowyer feels goalkeeper Dillon Phillips’s vision was impeded by an off-side player for the equaliser while Brown had handled the ball in the build up to the winner.

Asked if VAR should be implemented into the Championship as it has been used in the Premiership with much controversy, the Charlton boss’ reply was immediate.

“It should be!”

“If we’re playing in the Premier League tonight then those goals are disallowed, one-hundred percent.

“Why is that OK? Why is it allowed to happen in that division but not our division? Our division is not as important as the Premier League but we’re still playing to try and get there.

“It’s in the Premiership for big decisions, because we want teams to win games the right way, that’s why it’s being brought in.

“If the prize of going from here (The Championship) to the Premiership is that massive, £100 odd million they say, that’s why all the owners want to get there, a few decisions during the season could maybe stop teams getting promotion and the £100 odd million, so I think it should be in this division as well.

“I wish it was there today because we would’ve won the game 1-0!”

Charlton slipped to 14th in the table following defeat and will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to The Valley on Saturday.
