New Cardiff City boss Neil Harris was delighted with how his team fought back from two goals down to secure a draw away to Charlton.

Goals from Conor Gallagher and Jonathan Leko threatened to ruin his first game in charge of the Welsh club following the departure of Neil Warnock.

But after Dillon Phillips foiled Junior Hoilett’s penalty, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing pulled one back before substitute Lee Tomlin completed the turnaround.

While Harris, who left Millwall after four years at the helm, admitted the goals Cardiff let in were “disappointing” he hailed his new team’s mentality.

“Coming from behind, [it was a] point gained definitely,” he said after the match.

“The group was a little bit deflated at half-time and I think we felt a little bit sorry for ourselves. We certainly didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down at half-time, some of our passages of play football-wise were really good.

“We shifted our mentality a little bit with extra passes, got in some really good areas and we got done twice on the counter-attack – which I’d say the mentality has to be better within the group to defend whilst we’ve got the ball.

“However, to come back from 2-0 down, [and after] changing the shape at half-time as well and asking them to adjust their mentality to that as well, I’m really pleased with the boys.”

Asked what pleased him the most, Harris added: “Character within the group. [It was a] tough week last week for the players; in the sense of losing the manager, and a guy they have hugely respected within the club, to try and take on my ideas, the environment I want to create, the discipline that I want within the group, and to be 2-0 down is a bit of a kick in the proverbials to be fair.

“You hope for a reaction at half-time. I asked for a reaction and I got it.

“I’ve seen the group, they want to be successful, they want to learn and today I’ve seen that whatever starting 11 I put on the pitch has quality, and whoever I bring off the bench and onto the pitch has quality as well.”

Harris was also asked whether he was concerned about the manner in which Cardiff conceded their goals, a pair of counter-attacks to put Charlton comfortably ahead leading into the break.

He said: “Concerned is the wrong word, that’s your word not mine. I wouldn’t say concerned. [I was] disappointed with the goals today but we defend as a team and attack as a team.

“You have to look at the mindset of the group – why have we not kept more clean sheets during the course of the season? Is it an individual mindset, is it a group mindset?

“[I am] obviously disappointed with the goals today. The fact that, as I mentioned earlier, we give the ball away and been countered on and not defended properly.

“That’s the mindset that’s got to change, that mindset has got to change straight away.”
