Charlton fans are hearing from Steven Gerrard what they already knew about Joe Aribo.

The midfielder who made the move to Ibrox from The Valley in the summer came in for some glowing praise from his new manager after his latest stand-out performance.

Scoring his fourth goal in eight competitive appearances for the Gers, the 23-year-old has taken to life in Scotland like a duck to water.

His latest showing of talent came in his side’s 3-0 League Cup victory over East Fife where he got on the scoresheet, but it was his domineering midfield display that pushed Gerrard into making some huge claims about the Addicks Academy product.

“Joe can go as far as he wants,” the former England captain said.

“I hope he stays alongside me for many years but he’s got the world at his feet.

“I can’t wait to work with him for longer.

“He was outstanding from start to finish. He looked superb all day. He has four goals in eight games but it isn’t just about that it is about your all round performances.

“Top players turn up anywhere, it doesn’t matter if it is in front of 50,000, or 1,500, your standards are always the same and from day one Joe has done that.

“Everyone will go away talking about Joe Aribo and rightly so.”

'Ticks every box'

Aribo’s controversial move dealt a bitter blow to the Addicks who looked to retain the services of an influential cog in their promotion winning campaign last season.

With his contract run out, it was a further blow that they received a relatively small compensation sum, rumoured to be £300,000, as he moved outside of the English Football League.

Lee Bowyer spoke of desire to keep Aribo in London, and also his disappointment of failing to do so, but Bowyer’s loss was ultimately Gerrard’s gain.

“He was one who I was keen to get done and when I knew there was a chance I was all over it and did everything I could to get it over the line,” Gerrard said.

“I saw his potential and how much he wants it.

“It was a big change moving away from London but he has taken to it so smoothly.

“He has got so many attributes.

“It’s okay having them but if you have the right mentality and character you can go as far as you want to go.

“Joe expresses himself, he just loves playing football.

“He is robust, he’s leggy, rangy, can score a goal, can set them up, he tackles, he wins balls back, he’s skilful.

“He ticks every box and with experience he is only going to get better.”
