Conor Gallagher admitted he drew the foul that won the penalty that earned Charlton a point at Barnsley.

The on-loan midfielder played a starring role in the Addicks 2-2 draw at Oakwell, scoring his side's first goal before winning the 89th minute spot-kick that Lyle Taylor despatched to maintain their unbeaten start in the Championship.

Having gone behind twice through Cauley Woodrow and Conor Chaplin, Gallagher drew a foul from Bambo Diaby when he nicked the ball away from the onrushing defender.

“When I took the touch and saw him coming, I thought he’s running quite fast!” the 19-year-old said.

“He’s (Diaby) going to come and try tackle me, so thought I’ll get a toe on it and wait for the touch, which he did, and have the penalty.

“It was a clear penalty.”

Taylor made no mistake from the spot-kick to give Charlton a share of the spoils, and a point Gallagher felt they deserved.

“We wanted to win and had chances to win the game, but going down twice, we would take a draw.

“Would’ve hoped to come away with all three points, but with the way the game was we are happy to get a late goal and take the point.

“It was a very tough game.

“For me and the other midfielders, the way they pressed it meant we had no time on the ball, you saw I lost the ball a few times because they pressed so quickly.

“We went longer because they pressed higher and caught them out a few times and created a lot chances, so I think we adapted quite well.”

'I'm buzzing!'

The point leaves Charlton second in the Championship on seven points, only separated from Leeds in top spot by goal difference.

Gallagher’s strike, finishing off Jonny Williams fierce cross from the right, was his second in as many games after his effort against Stoke City last weekend, and he’s hoping there’s more to come.

“I’m buzzing, the most important thing is to get the points on the board, and to know I’m helping that’s the main thing.

“I try and make it in to the box as much as possible, and obviously scoring is something I want to do as much as I can, and I’ve got the players around me helping.

“But the main thing is the team and get the points as possible and hopefully ill score a few more goals.”

Charlton return to action on Wednesday as they welcome Nottingham Forest to The Valley, a quick turn around and an example of the relentlessness and physicality of Championship football, a challenge Gallagher was expecting and relishing.

“There is a difference between the Championship and the under-23s where I played last season, but I played four Checkatrade games last season so I kind of knew what to expect.

“It’s a step up and I’m still getting used to it but that’s what we’ve got to get ready for.

“It’s going to be a long season, but it’s not a problem.”
