Lee Bowyer has decided not to offer Callum Harriot a deal at The Valley while the jury is still out on Tyrone Mears.

Former Charlton Academy graduate Harriott, 25, had been training with the club in hope of earning a deal after becoming a free agent since his Reading contract expired at the end of last season.

Harriott had been involved in the Addick’s [re-season fixtures but Bowyer has opted against giving the attacker a contract.

Having brought in Jonathan Leko, Conor Gallagher, Beram Kayal, Macauley Bonne, Chuks Aneke, Jonny Williams and Sam Field in the transfer window, Bowyer believes he has enough in his armoury to compete in the attacking third.

“Callum we’ve said we won’t be signing, we thank him for coming in, training and getting fitter.

“Tyrone (Mears) he’s only been in Monday and Tuesday so we won’t rush that.

“We’ll see him today (Thursday) and tomorrow and have a chat at the weekend.”

Bowyer admitted Charlton have been looking at the free agent market for a right back after losing Anfernee Dijksteel to Middlesbrough last week.

Mears, 36, a former teammate of the current Addicks boss at West Ham United, joined in training this week in hope of securing a new club after his release by West Brom at the end of last season.

Loaned Out

The Charlton boss revealed he expects some of his younger players to leave the club on loan before the transfer window closes for the lower tiers of English football, but only if it benefitted his squad.

“We have to see who is where, what clubs come in, if it suits any of the lads.

“There are a lot of clubs ringing up for the younger lads, but we have to look at our squad and if we need them they’ll stay.

“But if it suits us and where they go, then there might be something done, but that’ll be at the end of the window, but nothing in the immediate future. “
