Charlton’s Jonny Williams will be a ‘different’ player this season according to his manager Lee Bowyer.

Despite winning over the Addicks faithful during his six-month spell last season, Bowyer believed there was more to come from the former Crystal Palace man, and he was right.

Starting and impressing in the season opening wins over Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, the 26-year-old has seemingly taken his game to new levels, and his manager believes he knows the reason why.

“Do you not see him working a lot harder out of possession?” he asked.

“You don’t just notice what he’s doing in possession, but you notice what he’s doing out of possession.

“He’s bringing more to the team.

“His fitness is getting better.

“That’s why he looks like he’s enjoying it more.

“He’s doing what he should be doing, working hard for the team.

“That’s why he’s looking better.”

Despite his quality, there were questions over the Welshman’s end-product.

With two assists in two games however, fans and critics are beginning to see what an asset he can be.

Starting on the wing, Williams dovetailed well with left-back Ben Purrington down the flank, offering the attacking full-back protection in and out of possession.

Something Bowyer revealed they’ve been working on since he signed a new deal at the club in the summer.

“It was something I told him after the Gillingham (pre-season fixture.)

“He didn’t run around but he does now, and he’s looking better, and everyone is noticing it.

“Jonny was excellent (against Stoke).

“Jonny Williams will be a completely different player this season.”
