Charlton's Jake Forster Cakey believes the hunger he and his teammates have to prove they belong in the Championship will drive them on this season.

Speaking after a comfortable 2-0 pre-season friendly win over Welling on Saturday the midfielder admitted he is fully aware the task ahead of the Addicks this season.

Forster-Caskey, 25, who missed the majority of last season's promotion winning campaign played 45-minutes for Lee Bowyer's men in the victory and admitted he and the squad are hungry to achieve more this season.

"We are realistic and know we’ve got a tough challenge ahead," the midfielder said.

"We know it’s going to be a tough ask and we know we are going to need to be at our best, to a man.

"I wasn’t quite ready to come back last season, but now I’m fighting fit and games are vital for me now.

"It’s a big challenge as we know but we’ve got a lot of hungry players at this club who have got a lot to prove.

"We haven’t set goals at this point.

"But we’ve got a lot of players with a lot to prove in that division, some haven’t played in that division, so we are all hungry and all have something to prove in the Championship and we’ll be fighting and giving it 100% every week."

Promotion was achieved at Wembley just over a month ago, but Forster-Caskey feels they can't dwell on that success and need to now concentrate fully on the task at hand.

"It's sunk in(promotion), everyone knows the challenge ahead," he continued.

"Last year was brilliant, but last year is gone as well.

"We got to take confidence from last year, but at the same time everyone starts from zero and we’ve got to build points and quickly."

New signings Ben Purrington, Chuks Aneke, Tom Lockyer, and Macauley Bonne have arrived and settled in well according to Forster-Caskey, maintaining the team spirit that galvanised the players and fans on their way to promotion.

"The boys seem great, it's nice seeing new faces, freshens up the changing room.

"We’ve still got the banter but just a few less players to do it with!

"We trust the manager to bring in players who will help us along the way and I’m sure they’re working hard to do that.

"Still think we need a few more but we’ve still got time but the new boys have settled in well and you they are looking sharp."
