The 2019/20 season is fast approaching and clubs are finalising their squads.

In Millwall and Charlton's case, not at the rate they'd like it seems.

With two threadbare squads it's no surprise that bookies think they'll struggle this year.

Charlton

This Is Local London:

Charlton's heroic effort in gaining promotion in a tough League One division on a shoestring budget was memorable.

More so from the manner they clinched it with an injury time Patrick Bauer strike.

But, memories count for nothing according to the bookies.

Bauer, is no longer there. In fact fact, with Joe Aribo expected to leave, seven of the Lee Bowyer's men who featured in that historic day at Wembley won't be.

The smallest budget in the league, a depleted squad, and an owner who is reluctant to splash cash all add up to the Addicks being one of the favourites for the drop.

If Charlton can compete in the league you feel it will be down to the talismanic, influential, charismatic forward- Lyle Taylor.

Goalscorers are hard to come by but if the former AFC Wimbledon man can continue his excellent form in the second tier, with the vocal support of the Valley behind them, Charlton can beat the odds.

Millwall

This Is Local London:

Neil Harris said there'll be a re-build this summer as the Lions look to improve on a disappointing relegation battling campaign last season.

So far Alex Pearce is the only signing, and with no goalkeeper on the books it looks like the re-build is taking longer than expected.

New faces are expected to join but with top scorer Lee Gregory moving on there'll be tough positions to fill.

Ben Thompson's emergence in the second half of the season is cause for optimism however. The box-to-box midfielder whose loan spell at Portsmouth seems to have worked wonders and he will be vital for Harris this season.

Already a fan favourite, the Millwall-bred 23-year-old is touted for captaincy already in his young career, and you feel the plight of the Lions season depends on Thompson.

Millwall are priced at 7/2 for the drop alongside QPR, Birmingham and new boys Luton.

They'll probably feel the odds are a little unfair, but is there better team who love being the underdog?!
