Millwall target Jamal Lowe ready for Championship football

Pompey rejected a £1.5milllion bid from Millwall for the 24-year-old as they hope to get closer to double that figure for the talented attacker who has a year remaining on his contract.

Former Pompey and now Wigan forward Gary Roberts spent six-months with Lowe at Fratton Park after his arrival from Hampton and Richmond Borough in January 2017, and believes he has what t takes to succeed in the Championship.

“I’ve seen enough of the Championship now to say he will be comfortable in that level, definitely,” Roberts told The News.

“Jamal’s genuinely a good player, has an eye for goal and is humble. When you’ve had that non-league grounding it gives you that little bit extra and you can see how much he wants to do well.

“Sorry, it’s not good news for Pompey fans, but I think he might come to the Championship and one or two might take him.

“I have seen enough of the Championship to think he’ll do really well.”

Millwall manager Neil Harris has expressed his wishes in the transfer window with a striker expected to be close to top of his list with top scorer Lee Gregory expected to depart in the next few weeks.

Lowe has courted the attention of several clubs in the Championship including Wigan and Charlton, after 17 goals in a season where Pompey lifted the Checkatrade Trophy and reached the play-off semi-final.

Roberts, 35, believes the former Barnet and St Albans City forward’s time spent in the lower leagues have helped motivate the sort after forward.

“Jamal was a breath of fresh air when he arrived, he really was,” he continued.

“A lovely kid, lovely kid, he came into Pompey so hungry to do well.

“It was his energy, his raw pace, I don’t think he gets enough credit but he doesn’t half work his socks off and has ability.

“He has got better with every season and I think will make his move this year into the Championship, not yet to the Premier League.

“I came from non-league myself and you are desperate for a chance – Jamal was similar, he just wanted to show people how good he was.

“He deserved his chance to break into that team in the end – and it was a hard side to break into.

“To see him kick on is no surprise.”

Millwall and Portsmouth fans agreed with Roberts in that Lowe was ready for the bigger stage, with Pompey fans believing he is worthy of a 'bigger' move.
