No sooner had Charlton secured Championship football next season Lee Bowyer was asked about his own future.

The manager who guided the Addicks out of League One with a 2-1 win over Sunderland at Wembley is out of contract this summer.

Talks have been rolling on for the best part of six-months between the Club and Bowyer, but the manager remained positive an agreement will be made.

“I can’t see why not!” he quipped when asked if he was confident of extending his 15-month stint as manager.

“I haven’t done much wrong.

“I spoke to the owner yesterday, he rang me to wish us good luck for today, and he said we will speak very soon.

“My phone will be off tonight, but I’m sure he’ll call me in the next few days no doubt.

“But I’m sure we are going to an agreement, I hope we do.”

Bowyer labels his men as 'heroes'

The 42-year-old’s managerial career has been nothing but a success since stepping back in to the game he retired from as a player in 2012, and admitted that experiencing promotion as a manager would be hard to envisage had he not helped old friend and team mate Harry Kewell out at Watford’s youth academy.

“When I stepped away, retired, I accepted I had my time, I was very fortunate to have the career I had.

“Then I thought I don’t want to be involved, which is why I stayed away.

“But after being away for five or six years, and tasting winning again in the short space of time I was back, to then come into the game and be around that feeling, I would say I want to stay in the game now!”

Bauer and Aribo Contracts

Bowyer isn’t alone in who’ll be without a contract this summer with as many as 14 players possibly leaving.

Promotion however has given the club some bargaining chips as they try to tie down some of their top talent, including match winner Pat Bauer.

“We are now able to go to Pat and offer him a contract, because we had to get promotion to talk to him because he was 100% going to the Championship.

“Joe (Aribo), I’m hoping he will now sign and he stays and keeps learning, because he’s a young lad and needs to learn more.

“We have to rebuild, that’s always the case, but I think we’ve done a good job this season, we didn’t spend a penny.

“Building a squad it’s going to tough, because I don’t think we are going to have much money!”
