Goalkeeper David Martin produced one of his best performances this season as Jonathan Kodjia guided Aston Villa to a record-breaking 10th consecutive win at Villa Park.

Villa capitalised on a loss of possession before Anwar El Ghazi teed up the striker for only his second league goal in 2019.

But while the Lions created very little going forward, registering just one shot on target all game, they had their outstanding shot stopper's showing to thank.

Martin thwarted goalscorer Kodjia and El Ghazi, as well as substitutes Andre Green and Keinan Davis, to prevent Villa from increasing their lead.

Millwall, who lost to Villa for the first time in all competitions since 1990, remain three points above Rotherham United in 21st with three games remaining.

Villa's win over Millwall means it's the first time they have won 10 games in a row since December 1910.

Ben Thompson, who was injured in the 1-1 draw with Brentford on Good Friday, was replaced with Ben Marshall as Neil Harris made just one change.

Millwall came into the Easter Monday clash keen to increase the gap between themselves and Rotherham United, and did well to stifle an in-form Villa side who sought to secure a spot in the playoffs.

But the hosts could have gone ahead early when an unmarked El Ghazi headed wide of the target from a corner just eight minutes in.

During a brief spell of possession, Marshall did well to thread in Jed Wallace as the forward tested goalkeeper Jed Steer from distance.

It was on the half hour mark that Villa drew first blood when Millwall were caught out in possession before a swift attacking move ended up with Kodjia sweeping home.

But the Ivory Coast international could have doubled the lead twice – Ryan Leonard’s errant pass sent him through on goal before goalkeeper David Martin did brilliantly to thwart him.

And had it not been for Martin sweeping up a loose ball after Jack Grealish’s pass ricocheted off Jake Cooper’s leg then the consequences could have been severe.

Millwall’s best chance all first half arrived in the closing stages when an outstretched Lee Gregory couldn’t connect with Wallace’s teasing cross into the box.

The Lions continued to firefight Villa’s attacking threats in the second half while struggling to hit the target themselves.

But the first of Martin’s several highlights arrived on 67 minutes when he denied Green with a brilliant stop from close range.

After Martin denied Green and El Ghazi with two strong stops his fingertips were left stinging by a rasping volley inside the box.

And following Davis’ diving header which he parried past the far post he thwarted El Ghazi in a one-on-one late on.

Although Harris brought on all three substitutes and saw Millwall go close through Cooper and Gregory his side couldn’t grab the equaliser.
