Joe Aribo’s man of the match performance in Charlton’s 2-1 win over Portsmouth may have alerted top sides but his manger believes he is at the right club.

The 21-year-old who’s out of contract in the summer opened the scoring in front of the Sky Sports camera’s which would’ve only enhanced his already glowing reputation.

Lee Bowyer sang the academy graduate’s praises following his impressive display but with contract negotiations still on-going with the in-demand star, he warned Aribo of the perils of moving on too soon.

“I hope he likes me and wants to stay,” Bowyer joked.

“There’s no rush, your career is not a sprint.

"He’ll have a 14, 15-year career, which is a long time, don’t go rushing into anything and ruin it.

“He could go somewhere and end up back in League One after watching football for two years.

“It has to be the right place for his own good.

“He has to be playing, whether that’s here, or wherever he goes, it has to be right, I’m honest with him and he trusts me.

“We want to keep him here, and hopefully we will.”

'He's getting better'

Aribo has impressed this season, contributing more in the goal scoring statistics, an area his manager said needed improvement if he was to fulfil the potential Bowyer believes he has.

“I’m just glad he’s getting in the box.

“It’s what I’ve been telling him to do since I’ve come through the door in the year and half I’ve been here.

“He’s doing it and scoring goals, if he can add that to the game, including everything else he’s good at, he can be some player!”

“He keeps getting better and he’s learning.

“He was outstanding today (against Portsmouth,) I can’t remember Joe giving the ball away, just remember him winning the ball back constantly, and breaking.

“They couldn’t handle him.”
