Millwall's Neil Harris on FA Cup after AFC Wimbledon win

Despite the gulf between the two teams, AFC Wimbledon stood up to the challenge and matched Millwall throughout the tie as only a Murray Wallace header separated them.

“I said to them before the game that it won’t be pretty today,” Harris said. “It won’t be a free-flowing game of football as Wimbledon would be capable for making it very difficult for us, and they did.”

“I think if we got the second goal with 20 or 30 minutes to go then we maybe would have gone on to score three or four and made it comfortable for ourselves.

“As pleased as I am with Murray Wallace’s goal and the commitment and the desire of the players, I am just as pleased with the clean sheet.”

The victory against the Dons means Millwall have won more FA Cup ties than any another team outside the top flight since reaching the final in 2004.

“Why does the FA Cup bring the best out of us as a club? Well if you think about cup ties and what they mean, it is not always the best team who wins the game and not always the best footballing team that win the game.

“It is the team with the biggest heart, the right mentality who can win first balls, second balls and set plays who win games – that’s why I think we have been good under me in this competition.”

Following the result, Millwall will now receive £360,000 in prize money amounting their total to £675,000 from their run in the competition.

“It is huge for us. I am pleased for the chairman and the board who put their own money into our club but do not get any return for it. It just gives us an opportunity - It is not money we can spend at the moment, but it cuts the losses and helps us moving forward.

“Football has had bad press recently and rightly so. We need to be better in society in general but today people will be talking about Millwall being the last eight of the best cup competition in the world.”
