Charlton have an 'option' on signing a free agent but are not close yet says Lee Bowyer.

With the transfer window now closed Bowyer has been left to search the free agent market to find the second striker he wanted to bring in.

The Addicks manager has revealed the club are in the market and there are player’s that are of interest.

“We are looking at free agents, and there’s an option,” said Bowyer.

“We were doing that in the first place anyway as we didn’t have any money to spend.

"We aren't close yet, just a few conversations if people have become available.

“It’ll have to suit both parties.

“Obviously the lad will have to want to come but we are asking questions and if there is anyone out there that’s going to improve us.

“If they’re not going to improve us there’s no point.

“Obviously people are throwing names at us now because they know our situation but like I said it has to improve us and be the right person.”

Charlton lost Karlan Grant at the end of the window and brought in Josh Parker from Gillingham to fill the void.

The Antiguan made his debut off the bench in the 1-0 defeat at Fleetwood last weekend but Bowyer insists there will be more to come from the forward.

“We’ve done a lot of work on Tuesday, a long session, but it doesn’t happen overnight.

“The more he trains the more he’ll understands the way we play.

“He’ll get fitter and better.”

Charlton welcome Southend United on Saturday.
