Julian Speroni will make his 404th appearance for Crystal Palace against Liverpool on Saturday, and possibly his last.

Injuries to Wayne Hennessey and Vicente Guaita have given Speroni an opportunity between the sticks and manager Roy Hodgson says he has complete faith in the Argentinian.

Hodgson, when asked if the 36-year-old would start at Anfield quipped:

“I hope so! He’s the only one we’ve got!

“He’s a very good goalkeeper too.

“We’re very fortunate to have a goalkeeper with the quality he’s got. We’re luckier than most clubs. Most clubs have a very young guy with little experience as third choice.

“I’m happy we’ve got him.”

Speaking in Friday’s press conference, Hodgson said he had complete trust in the shot stopper who’s in his 15th season at the club having moved from Dundee for half a million pounds in 2004.

“Julian is a match player," Hodgson continued

“He has confidence in himself, we’ve great pride in what he’s achieved at this club, where he’s a legend.

“He’s happy to have got the chance and he’ll be working hard to stay in contention even when the other two are fit again.”

Hodgson took time to confirm that Palace were hopeful of completing the signing of 21-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Sai Paulo.

The Brazilian has been tracked for months and is seen as a long-term option in goal.

Hodgson admitted the potential timing of the keeper’s arrival was merely coincidental with the club having to call upon Peroni, the third-choice keeper, to take to the field.

“It’s been going on for some time.

“Doug Freedman did some scouting work in South America six months ago and talk of him coming over here to have a look at him, and strangely it’s taken this amount of time to come about.

“It’s coincided with the injury to our keepers, and in no way are they linked.”

The injuries to Hennessey and Guaita are not thought to be too serious but Hodgson said medical staff could not give a time frame on the injury yet.
