Here's  five things we learned from Millwall's 1-0 win over Reading

Jed Wallace Has a Peach in His Locker

Jed Wallace seems to be growing into his full second season with the Lions. Since signing a new long-term deal back in November, the winger’s performances have got better with every passing game.

What he has not done consistently for the Lions is score goals. He netted 17-goals in League Two as a teenager with Portsmouth and has recently come under criticism for not contributing enough to Millwall’s goals.

However, against Reading, Wallace added to his goal tally in style. A 25-yard free-kick found the top corner with so much pace that it would give, Lucas Dinge’s and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent freekicks a run for their money in any goal of the month award.

Jed Wallace is one of Millwall’s most dangerous players, he started the season slow but he stood firm and now is growing into the season like a fine wine. He has now proved to have peach in his locker and if he unleashes it more often than not, Jed Wallace could become the iconic figure of the Lions No.7 jersey in many years to come.

Millwall still have a lot to improve on

Despite running out as 1-0 victors on the day, the performance as a whole was dire and although not phased, Harris admitted it.

Being against ten men for 80 minutes of the game, many would have expected the Lions to dominate possession and run riot at The Den against a team who have only won three away games in 2018. However, the Lions did anything but the expected. They sat back while Reading passed around them and if it was not for the red card, the result could have been a lot different.

Millwall face Nottingham Forrest on Saturday and if they produce a similar performance they will come up short. Too many times have Millwall conceded late goals this season and it could have been the case against Reading, with the crossbar only coming to the rescue.

The Lions desperately need to improve their game, their direct style suits them but against the teams above them in the table it is less effective. They need to be able to execute an alternative ground game if they are going to make a gap between themselves and the drop zone.

The conundrum of whether Millwall should go with new signings or recalls

With the January Transfer window looming, two options come available to Millwall, whether to sign new players or recall the players they already have out on loan.

Both Ben Thompson and Fred Onyedinma are thriving at Portsmouth and Wycombe Wanders and there is a huge debate on whether Harris should halt their development and recall them back to the Millwall squad.

The Lions have one of the smallest squads in the league and with the long term injuries of Tom Bradshaw and Shaun Williams, that size has become even smaller. Against Reading, all Millwall’s substitutes failed to make an impact, indicating that they lack depth in areas.

The busy festive schedule will definitely push Millwall’s small squad to its limits and Harris has an important decision to make. Does he recall the inform player’s that are out on loan or does he bring in some fresh faces?

If Gomes is going to keep Reading up, he needs funds.

The new Reading manager would have taken a lot away from his first team in charge, but he also would have found out that some of the players in Reading’s ranks will not suit his philosophy.

The first sign of this is when he left out Jon Doi Boovarsson and included academy graduate 20-year old Gabriel Osho in his place. The youngster was given the final ten minutes to prove himself to the new manager while the experienced Championship winger, Boovarsson was left at home.

Reading failed to create anything clear cut at Millwall and if Gomes is going to carry them out of the relegation zone then they need reinforcements, if not Reading will  find themselves in League One  and Gomes will be remembered as the man that led them there.

Fine Margins

Millwall manager, Neil Harris has mentioned on numerous occasions that Championship games are decided by fine margins and that during the first half of the season the fine margins have been going against Millwall.

In his programme notes he regurgitated this message to the fans and his prophecy rang true on the final whistle. Jed Wallace’s free-kick was that fine margin that set them apart from Reading on the day and the Lions boss will be hoping that these clinical moments in games will now continue to fall on the their side.

There will be more fine margins to be determined throughout the season which will make or break their season. If Harris and his players can get their rulers out and draw a straight fine margin like they did today, then they will remain to play Championship football beyond this season.
