The defender has been in and out of Lee Bowyer’s side at the start of this campaign that has not kicked on from last season.

Having cemented himself as a regular at the back end of last season the 22-year-old found himself on the bench at the beginning of this season.

Injuries and a heavy fixture-list gave Dijksteel a chance to re-claim his starting berth at right-back, a chance it seems he hasn’t taken with Chris Solly currently occupying the right-back spot that he’s seeking.

The form of the veteran is limiting the Dutchman to mainly cup appearances or coming off the bench to close games out.

His most recent performance of note was the 5-0 win in the FA Cup second round replay over Mansfield.

Judging by that display he may require a few more games before Bowyer has complete confidence in the young man. A first half performance to forget for Dijksteel prompted Bowyer to single him out post-match, never a good sign.

Despite that poor performance Djiksteel did play the full 90 the following game at home to Bristol Rovers, meaning Bowyer must see some quality in the man in his third season.
