Max Meyer has divided opinion in the terraces since his arrival in the summer, but Saturday’s showing in the goalless draw at Old Trafford will help the German’s cause no end.

Meyer played the full 90 minutes in a dogged display and earned praise from Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

“It’s nice for him to play as well as he did in a good team performance,” said Hodgson.

“He’s one of many to come away thinking ‘I’ve had a good game.’

“He’s been patient waiting for his chance to grab hold of his shirt, and fight people off it.

“Today I thought he was faultless in both attacking and defence. What he gives us is when he is in possession he is capable of finding that last pass and providing our forwards with a chance.”

The much-needed point come after a tough run of fixtures for Hodgson where they managed to pick up one point from the ties against Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham prior to the weekend. The point at Old Trafford keeps Palace out of the relegation zone in 16th.

There’s been no hiding where Palace need improving, and Hodgson knows he’ll need a change in fortune in front of goal to start climbing the league.

“Our defending has been really good. Where we’ve been let down, is not that we’ve not created chances, we just haven’t been ruthless or clever enough to take them. “It’s a matter of time before the chances go in.”

Despite not having registered a Premier League win in eight matches, Hodgson still believes in his squad and that the performances have deserved more than the two points they’ve amassed over that time.

“I’ve never lost confidence in this team even during this run.

“As a manager we have to make sure the team plays to a level we think they’re capable of, and the last four games there’s not been one criticism I can level at them, other than the performance deserves more, but to get more we got to start taking chances.”
