Roy Hodgson believes Luka Milivojevic's penalty miss proved to be a turning point as Crystal Palace succumbed to a late defeat at Everton.

Jordan Pickford was equal to the skipper's strike after referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot when Wilfried Zaha was clipped inside the box by Seamus Coleman.

Hodgson's side looked poised to come away with a point from Goodison Park, but goals from super-subs Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun meant the hosts snatched all three.

He said: "We came across a goalkeeper in form, of course. When we had the penalty chance the miss definitely lifted the crowd, they really got behind their team and it gave them fresh impetus going forward.

"The fact is you have to take your chances.

"I am not certain people would have begrudged us a result had we got one, but we didn't and we have to now dust ourselves down and lift ourselves up because there is no point feeling sorry for yourselves."

Palace's latest defeat is their third in a row as they slip to 15th in the Premier League table, level with West Ham United on both points and goal difference.

But they now have a tough November schedule ahead - with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United all still to come.

The Gunners are in town next before the Eagles must travel north for a Carabao Cup clash with Middlesbrough during midweek on the last day of October.
