Charlton midfielder Jamie Ward would be keen to extend his loan stay at The Valley beyond December.

Ward, on loan from Nottingham Forest, is expected back at the Championship club in January but the Northern Irish international said he would like to stay and gain promotion with Lee Bowyer’s side.

“I’d enjoy staying until the end of the season, hopefully longer,” Ward said after Charlton’s 2-0 win over Barnsley.

“The most important thing is to get this club promoted and help them the next few months, at the moment I have until January and hopefully we can get it extended and stay to the end of the season.”

Ward conceded that the final say was not down to him but down to his parent club and Charlton, but insisted he was once again enjoying his football under Bowyer.

“It’s nice to be wanted again. It’s always hard when you’re not wanted at other clubs so it’s nice having a manager who wants me and willing to play me.”

Despite being away from his family, including new-born son Bodie, Ward said he’s delighted to be with the club. Assisting Karlan Grant for one of his two goals on Saturday Ward he has settled well in South East London, that said, he knows he has to perform regularly to keep his place in the side.

“The manager has a tough decision between me and Tarique (Fosu-Henry) and I know if I’m not doing the business I have someone breathing down my neck, and the same the other way around.

“But it’s good to have competition for places as it keeps people on their toes.  And keeps the club going in the right direction.”

Saturday’s win moves Charlton up to ninth in League One, and will welcome former manager Karl Robinson’s Oxford to The Valley on Tuesday night.
