Charlie Grainger will be allowed to leave Leyton Orient on loan, head coach Justin Edinburgh has confirmed.

The young goalkeeper has fallen down the pecking order since Edinburgh’s arrival as head coach and hasn’t been included in any of the O’s match-day squads this campaign.

Grainger, who has been capped by England at Under-18 level, came through Orient’s academy and made his first team debut for the East London side against Luton Town in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in September 2015.

He signed a new two-year deal at the Breyer Group Stadium in June 2017 following Nigel Travis’ takeover and started last season as the O’s first choice goalkeeper under Steve Davis.

However, Grainger was replaced by Dean Brill as the club’s number one in Edinburgh’s first match in charge against Solihull Moors in December and had to be content with a spot on the bench for the remainder of the campaign as the O’s secured a 13th place finish in the National League.

But Grainger has now fallen further down the pecking order at Brisbane Road, with Sam Sargeant acting as Orient’s number two this season, having penned a new two-year contract at the club in the summer.

Young forward Ruel Sotiriou joined Bishop’s Stortford to get some valuable minutes under his belt three weeks ago and with Grainger currently out of favour, Edinburgh confirmed after Saturday’s win over Maidenhead that the 22-year-old goalkeeper is available to depart on loan.

He said: “There’s an opportunity for Charlie Grainger. He’s had one or two opportunities that he felt weren’t right for him. But he’s available for loan. We’re not in a rush.”

On Sotiriou’s move to Bishop’s Stortford, Edinburgh added: “I think Ruel needed match minutes. Unfortunately he picked up an injury while playing for Bishop’s Stortford so he missed today’s (Saturday’s) game, but hopefully it won’t be too long till he’s back.”
