Portobello Road, located in Notting Hill, is known for being one of London’s (and the world’s) most iconic market. It is filled with a variety of pubs and restaurants for all to enjoy.  The market has an amazing wide range of produce and second-hand products. For example, you can purchase fresh fruit and veg, a variety of different goods including second-hand clothes and food. Every week there are countless tourists to the area, Notting Hill locals and Londoners visit the market. As well as all these items available, there are valuable antiques and trinkets for all to buy!

I discovered Portobello Road a few years ago and I make a point of visiting at least 3 times a month! The market is open from Friday- Sunday, but you can still visit the shops and restaurants Monday- Sunday. The best way to reach the market is by travelling on the District line to Notting Hill Gate station as you can easily browse vintage jewellery, accessories, antiques and bric-a-bracs. If you would like to head straight to the second-hand clothes and street food, your best option is to catch a tube to Ladbroke Grove station.

Many people don’t know that Portobello used to be a farm and it got its name from ‘Puerto Bello’ in memory of Admiral Vernon. Since then, it has been filled with houses, shops and restaurants. The film ‘Notting Hill’ has also been a popular selling point for the market with it being a prominent feature in the movie.

Whilst shopping in the market last week, I asked a customer their thoughts on the market and they said ‘I have been coming to the market for many years now, and I love how there is a somewhere for everyone to enjoy. From vinyl’s to fresh food, there is something for all ages.’

If you’re thinking of visiting Portobello Road, I would highly recommend it. As well as buying sustainably, you can purchase many unique items and trinkets which cannot be found anywhere else!

By visiting the market, you can help contribute to the ‘Friends Of Portobello’ campaign and they help preserve the street’s one-of-a-kind dynamic and they believe in campaigning against branded chain shops. Portobello Road is also home to Electric Cinema which is one of Britain’s oldest cinemas to date. By visiting the market, you are reducing the waste ending up in landfills by shopping sustainable and helping the planet stay green!
