Uncharted is a film which many people have been awaiting to be released in cinemas due to it following the character Nathan Drake, who is played by Tom Holland. However, many have been unsure whether or not it will be as good as other films, due to it being based on the video game Uncharted. Typically, films based on video games have had mixed reviews on websites such as Rotten Tomatoes, but there have been exceptions such as The Angry Birds Movie 2.

Uncharted, the film is about Nathan ‘Nate’ Drake (Tom Holland) who is recruited by treasure hunter Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) in order to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. This starts as a mission for the duo, but they are soon joined by Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and this quickly escalates into a race against him, to reach the treasure first. Moncada believes him, and his family are the rightful heirs. As you follow Nate and Sully they start to decipher all the clues to make their way to find $5 billion in treasure, Nate is also hopeful in being able to find his long-lost brother, Sam.

A great thing about the film is that you are thrown straight into the action, meaning that no time is wasted trying to explain any backstories of characters, therefore engaging the audience’s attention right away. You also don’t need to know any context about the video game before you watch it. In addition, there are incredible special effects and impressive action sequences which flowed and helped to create tension. Tom Holland’s charisma as Nathan Drake and the chemistry between the 2 main characters definitely carries the film as it helps to keep the audience engaged, while we are following their journey to find the treasure.

However, even though the film is full of action there have been multiple critiques. One of these is that it is not very original as it settles into the well-worn traditions of this genre. This means that at some parts it can be predictable, which therefore affects the mood of the film as you then lack the emotion and tension needed to fully connect with the characters and narrative.

I asked Joshua Long about his thoughts on the film and he said “it is a watchable film with lots of action, although predictable at times”.

Overall, Uncharted is a great film, which I would recommend going to watch whether or not you have played the video game, since many state it is like an Indiana Jones movie. It is an action-packed film, which makes it a great way to take a short break from life and join this sensational ride of trying to solve the puzzle in order to find the treasure before Moncada.
