"Man in serious condition in hospital following explosion in Preston Drive #Epsom 1.50pm 8/8," the short statement posted to Twitter on Monday afternoon read.
"Property suspected being used for production of cannabis oil. Man+woman in 30s, man de-arrested after being taken to hospital, woman released on bail pending further investigation."
The origins of the explosion, and reasons why police suspected the production of cannabis oil at the property where it happened, were unclear at the time of publication.
Cannabis oil is legal in the UK in certain forms (the 'CBD' form) and in certain circumstances.
Recent changes to UK law mean that cannabis with the psychoactive THC component it is available in small doses from specialist doctors in the UK, who are legally allowed to prescribe cannabis-derived medicinal products.
This came after a cannabis product called Sativex, which is a 50-50 mix of THC and CBD produced in a lab, was been approved for use in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency as a treatment for multiple sclerosis.
