Police are warning residents about a suspected scam involving men knocking on doors in Chertsey and posing as councillors.

The Runnymede section of Surrey Police said they had received reports of two men knocking on doors requesting entry while claiming to be from Runnymede Borough Council on Tuesday morning (March 17).

"We have had a report of suspicious persons knocking on doors in the #Chertsey area this morning posing has representatives from Runnymede Borough Council.

"The two males have asked to look in the kitchen and access utility cupboards," a spokesperson for Runnymede Police said.

They meanwhile asked anyone who had experienced such behaviour recently to contact police on the 101 or online number, and anyone with doorbell camera footage to send it to police for publication.

"We are in the area patrolling as we write. #ScamAware," Runnymede Police said in a post on their Facebook page about the suspected scam.
