Pupils from a Thornton Heath are hoping they can walk into the record books when they take part in a national attempt to form the largest ever walking bus tomorrow.

The students from Kensington Avenue School are joining the record attempt organised by national road safety charity Brake in which 200,000 children, from 250 schools, will be taking part in short walks as part of supervised "walking buses" and learning essential road safety lessons on the way.

The Kensington Avenue children will use safe routes around their school to break the world record for the biggest simultaneous walking bus.

Brake estimates that 82,315 children took part in the 2007 Record Breaking Walking Bus, and are awaiting confirmation of the new record.

A "walking bus" is a safe way for children to get to and from school, holding hands in pairs and supervised by responsible adults.

Brake hopes this initiative will encourage schools to set up their own walking bus, if they do not already have one, and show parents and residents the importance of driving particularly carefully around schools and residential areas.
