DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a football coach in West Wickham have offered a £20,000 reward on the third anniversary of his death for information leading to the conviction of his killer.

Ryan Musgrove was waiting to start football training with Coney Hall FC when the suspect approached from behind a tree line and shot him three times on July 16, 2009.

Officers say the gunman was seen on several occasions cycling around the vicinity of the murder scene in Sparrows Den playing fields in the days leading up to Mr Musgrove's death.

The suspect is described as a white man, with a slim build, wearing dark clothing, possibly a balaclava, a cycling helmet, goggles or sunglasses and a face mask.

He left the scene on a black mountain bike in the direction of New Addington, Croydon.

The gun used in the murder was a Luger P8, a Second World War German issue firearm which police say is an "unusual" weapon and "very distinctive in style".

Detectives say the suspect was seen days before the shooting at 6pm on July 9 at Coney Hall Recreation Ground and again on July 13 between 4.30pm and 5pm.

He was seen at 6.30pm on July 14 at Sparrow Den playing fields and again on July 16 between 6pm and 6.30pm - when he shot dead Mr Musgrove.

Mr Musgrove had connections to organised cannabis farming and was a drug debt collector.

Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector John MacFarlane said: "Ryan drove to the playing fields and arrived at around 6.35pm to organise football training with Coney Hall FC. The team had only recently started using Sparrow Den playing fields as a training venue.

"Ryan parked his silver VW Golf and with a companion walked to the playing fields and met another member of the football team.

"As they were talking a man appeared from a nearby hedge, dropping his bicycle to the ground and walked up to the men. He then shot Ryan three times and fled on the bike across the adjacent field in the direction of New Addington.

"The suspect had been seen in the area of Sparrows Den playing fields between 6pm and 7pm on Tuesday July 14 and he was also seen in the vicinity of Coney Hall Football club, West Wickham, about half a mile away between the same times on Thursday July 9.

"Through our investigations we have established that Ryan led a compartmentalised lifestyle which included connections to organised cannabis farming and to criminals for which he enforced drug debts.

"We believe this was a planned and targeted attack on Ryan. We also believe his killer was aware of his movements and had visited the location prior to the murder on a reconnaissance mission.

"I strongly believe that there are people out there who know exactly what happened to Ryan and who is responsible for his murder. I would urge them to come forward in the strictest confidence."
