Shake off the winter blues and start the new year with a beautiful winter walk around Painshill Park.
The 18th century gardens comprises 158 acres and follies, or landscape interest points, that were installed by original owner Charles Hamilton. The follies were restored when Elmbridge Council bought the park and include a grotto, a Gothic temple, a Roman mausoleum, a Gothic abbey ruins and a Gothic tower with a view of the countryside.
Painshill Park marketing manager Beth Meades said “It’s a special time of the year when the frosty landscape creates an amazing transformation.
“The follies look even more magical and the rich variety of evergreen conifers and pines are picture postcard perfect.” In 1998, the park was awarded the Europa Nostra Medal for exemplary restoration from a state of extreme neglect.
Painshill Park is open for free every Wednesday in January from 10.30am to 4pm (last entry 3pm).
