A DEAF man from Edmonton who has served nearly 60 years in the British Red Cross has made it to the semi-finals of a national awards scheme recognising courageous achievements for people who are hard of hearing.

Robin Standing, 70, from Edmonton is one step closer to winning the national Sound Barrier Star Awards competition, after his story of triumph over adversity was chosen as the most inspirational in the region.

Mr Standing has been profoundly deaf since the age of two and a half when he suffered Meningitis. He joined the British Red Cross as a teenager after having first aid lessons.

The competition, run by Specsavers hearing centres in association with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, recognises ordinary individuals for their achievements or courage, despite being hard of hearing or deaf. Ten regional semi-finalists have been chosen from all entries received across the country, five of which will be selected to attend the grand final in London on Wednesday September 22 to compete for the title of Sound Barrier Star of the Year.

Mr Standing said: "I am delighted to have been chosen as a regional finalist for the awards, although I didn't even know I had been nominated, it's great to be recognised for my voluntary work with the British Red Cross in the local community.

Mr Standing was nominated for the award thanks to 58 years volunteering with the British Red Cross where he supports the delivery of first aid learning to the deaf community, and received a Red Cross Badge of Honour for devoted service.

In 2000 he was awarded a Certificate of Commendation for his courage in assisting at a severe road accident and for the past six years has attended a monthly London Ambulance Service Forum providing advice and guidance on services for deaf people.

During his time with the Red Cross Mr Standing has met the Queen, with whom he conversed in sign language.

Mr Standing was nominated by Pamela Chapman, Operations manager at British Red Cross. Ms Chapman said: "I am delighted Robin has been chosen as a regional finalist. Robin's cheerful demeanour, patience and willingness to help everyone has meant he has always been a pleasure to work with."
