Wycombe Wanderers star Mark Philo has been killed in a car accident.

The 21-year-old midfielder died at 4.20pm in the Royal Berkshire Hospital on Saturday after a car crash in Wokingham in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police were called to the scene at 1.20am where a Vauxhall Astra, which Philo was driving, had collided with a white Renault Megane at the junction of Sandhurst Road and Finchampstead Road.

The driver of the Renault, a woman in her sixties died at the scene. Philo's two passengers escaped unhurt.

The junction was shut until around 9am to enable accident investigators to survey the scene and for debris, including a telegraph pole, to be cleared.

Wanderers manager John Gorman broke the news to his players immediately after their 2-0 home win against Notts County.

Gorman said: "He was a fantastic kid, he lived for football and always had a smile on his face"

Philo was described as an excellent prospect and had been so highly rated that former manager Tony Adams had wanted to build a team around him.

He had been at the club since the age of 15, and had recently recovered from two broken ankles.

Grieving Wanderers fans have flooded the club with tributes to Philo.

The stadium gates were left open on Sunday to allow fans to leave flowers, scarves and messages of condolence.

Internet forums have also seen hundreds of football lovers add their messages of sympathy to Philo's family and friends.

Today the club has invited supporters to sign a condolence book in the main reception at the ground in Hillbottom Road.

Wycombe Wanderers have also announced that tomorrow night's Berks and Bucks Senior Cup game against Aylesbury United has been postponed in respect to the 21-year-old midfielder, who was due to play in the game.
