A tube crime blitz will be launched over the Easter break, as part of a crack down on trespassers and vandals on the underground.

Operation Rhino, a partnership between London Underground (LU), British Transport Police (BTP) and Metropolitan Police Air Support Unit, is targeting trespass and vandalism across the Tube.

Chief Inspector Dave Dickason, of British Transport Police, said: "Youngsters have been warned: It is very dangerous to trespass or attempt vandalism on the Tube. What's more, it is a criminal offence. Neither London Underground nor BTP will tolerate it and if we catch you, you will be arrested and prosecuted."

In the last four years Operation Rhino has been a success; as the east end of the District line has had a 40 per cent decrease in vandalism.

Chief Insp Dickason added: "These incidents tend to increase during the school holidays. Some children as young as eight years old have thrown objects at trains, damaged fencing and railway equipment."

New technology will be used in the fight against these activities. A Metropolitan Police Helicopter will patrol lines over Easter.

Chief Insp Dickason said: "It carries sophisticated camera equipment which can spot trespassers and vandals before they spot the helicopter. Our fast response teams, some on motorbike, can then be deployed to arrest those responsible."

The penalty for trespassing on the railways is a maximum fine of £1,000. The maximum penalty for stone throwing with intent to endanger is life imprisonment.

To report vandalism and trespass on the Underground please alert a member of LU staff or call BTP on 0800 40 50 40.
