A SIX week old baby girl has been found abandoned on a north London doorstep.

The girl, named Christina by hospital staff caring for her, was discovered wrapped in blankets outside a house in Holloway's Thorpdale Road.

London Ambulance Service took the child to Whittington Hospital, where staff said she is fit and healthy.

Police, together with Islington Social Services, are now attempting to trace the mother of the child.

They are urging a woman who contacted Whittington Hospital to call again.

The woman called the hospital on Wednesday. She claimed to be the child's mother but ended the call before leaving any details.

Detective Inspector Colin Welsh, of Islington's Child Protection Unit, said: "The woman explained to staff at the Whittington Hospital that she was the mother of the abandoned baby but hung up before further details could be obtained. We urge this woman to call us again as soon as possible."

DI Welsh added: "We understand that the mother may well be frightened and distressed but we are here to offer every assistance."

"Our primary concern is her welfare and the safety of her baby. Christina is being well cared for by staff at Whittington Hospital but it is essential that we trace mum as soon as possible."

Detetctives also want to speak to anyone with information about the identity of the child's mother as well as anyone who noticed a female in the latter stages of pregnancy who is now without a child.

Police said all calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Anyone with information should contact DI Welsh at Islington police station on 020 7421 0276. Alternatively, contact the Whittington Hospital on 020 7288 3203.
