Councillors gave the green light to a programme of environmental schemes in the borough of Barnet on Monday
The schemes are part of the Barnet Local Agenda 21 strategy to protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
Wildlife in parks and play areas will be protected by dealing with vermin and pests using natural predators rather than relying on pesticides.
The council will also increase the number of trees by planting at least 2,000 each year.
As well as directly improving the environment, the strategy also includes measures to make the public more aware of conservation issues.
Libraries will host exhibitions and establish information points; notice boards will be erected in parks and open spaces; and environmental education packs called Wild Beginnings will be sent to schools.
The schemes, which have been developed in partnership with residents and businesses, will be implemented over the next two years.
