A man who disarmed a gunman who was threatening to shoot has been awarded for his bravery by the Lord Mayor of London.

Dominic Heldt, 36, from Northolt, was presented a Binney Certificate of Merit at a ceremony in London on Thursday, December 4.

In January 2000, Mr Heldt was working at a hotel near Heathrow Airport when a visitor asked for help in finding his room and wanted to be shown the way.

Mr Heldt escorted him but when they got to the door, the man pulled a gun and was threatening to shoot someone.

Mr Heldt saw him put a bullet in the gun and take off the safety catch, then the man asked him to open the door to the room.

The quick-thinking hero said he would have to go downstairs for another swipe card, but on the way, he managed to grab hold of the gun from the man and call police.

The man was arrested, and later police discovered that the gun was a blank firing pistol.

Mr Heldt was one of several members of the public who had their bravery recognised at the Binney Memorial Awards ceremony held at Goldsmiths' Hall in the City of London.

The awards commemorate Captain Ralph D Binney who died while trying to prevent smash-and-grab thieves from escaping in the City of London in 1944.
