Eco-conscious commuters will be able to continue their quest to be green following the news that bike racks will be installed at Gunnersbury station.

Commuters who rode to the station were left disgruntled after Transport for London (TfL) put up signs in September warning that bikes parked by the entrance to the station would be removed by police.

At the time TfL said the decision was for health and safety reasons as parked bikes were causing an obstruction.

However, following its decision to prohibit the use of cycle stands within the station, which is on the east side of Gunnersbury Park, Hounslow Council announced last week that it would be providing spaces for 16 bikes to park on the footpath near the station entrance.

The stands will be funded by TfL and are due to be installed by the end of November.

TfL said it is in discussions with the council to find a solution to the bike parking issue. Station user and cyclist campaigner Lesley Churchill-Birch said while delighted with the news she believed covered bike racks were essential.

She said: “We obviously need covered racks. Before we could park inside the station and we didn’t have to worry about getting the seats of our bikes wet.”

Chris Calvi-Freeman, head of transport for Hounslow Council, said the council was looking at the possibility of a covered cycle stand but this would take longer to arrange and require careful design.

He said: “We will continue to monitor the use made of the new stands at Gunnersbury and other Tube and railway stations and attempt to install more stands where demand warrants and if space permits.”
