Festival fever is being tapped into by communities who want to put on fantastic events for free, and one of the most promising is the first Let the Music Speak festival in Maple Village, Roehampton.

The day starts at noon at The Green on Danebury Avenue, SW15, where you will be able to experience music, dance, art and food from all manner of different cultures. The live music acts go from gospel to folk, hip hop to rock as well as spoken word artists.

Let the Music Speak is in association with Regenerate UK, a charity which runs projects improving people’s lives in Roehampton’s Alton Estate and also runs schemes in Kenya. Also involved are OneTaste, the collective of London-based musicians and poets who you may know from their monthly nights at the Bedford pub in Balham.

OneTaste has, in the space of a few years, established itself as a hotbed of inspired talent which helps sell out London shows, festival tours and street jams. At Let The Music Speak, OneTaste’s vibe will be represented by hip hop/a cappella act Excentral Tempest who plays before heading to the Leeds Festival on Sunday and Joe Driscoll, winner of the music industry’s Indy Award for Best Solo Act, plus OneTaste artists will be taking the stage in an improv session with the day’s headliners - the Bays.

The Bays are a hell of a talented bunch. The quartet work to an ethos of not rehearsing or writing, just rocking up to a venue and playing whatever their creative juices can muster at that moment.

They don’t use loops or backing tracks, just pure improvisation so no two Bays gigs are the same. Stylistically they span deep house, techno, hip hop, electro and drum n bass layered with dubby bass lines, samples and synths.

Another star act is the London Community Gospel Choir, one of the pioneering gospel acts in the UK who this year have again played Glastonbury Festival and supported Leona Lewis on BBC's Sport Relief and Dancing on Ice. Personally I have seen them a few times at the Royal Festival Hall and they are an incredibly powerful act.

Acclaimed rapper H20 the Fire will be performing, as will be outstanding jazz/soul singer Rahel, vocalist Eden Rox, who has been signed to a label since she was 14, soulful acoustic singer Charlotte Soraia and folk star Jono McCleery with the Dans.

Aside from the top music acts will be a fairground, petting farm, plenty of fun activities for the kids and stalls vending some very tasty food.
