DofE is a national award for secondary age students to embark on different activities and programs to better themselves and the world around them. Recently, I and a group of 6 friends underwent our Silver Expedition through the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty south east of London.

Our journey through the High Weald AONB begins with meticulous planning, as we map out our route, considering terrain, distance, and essential supplies. This experience was simply unforgettable. With its varied terrain made up of rolling hills, old woodlands, and quaint villages preserved in time, the High Weald AONB spans portions of Kent, Sussex, and Surrey. A truly hidden gem for outdoor explorers and DofE expeditionists alike! Setting off from Crowborough, we embarked on a voyage of discovery, each step revealing a new facet of this captivating landscape.

The High Weald's uneven terrain poses both physical and mental obstacles, rewarding our efforts with stunning panoramas and moments of tranquilly in the rolling countryside. We pass through old, wildlife-rich forests along the route, where the sound of rustling leaves and singing birds combines to create a symphony of the natural world.

We have the chance to interact with local people as the journey progresses, learning about rural life and the rich history that permeates the area. Each encounter deepens our journey and strengthens our bond with the land and its people, whether we're stopping for refreshments in a wet bog or setting up camp under the stars in designated areas.

As the expedition slowly finished, we returned to Crowborough, with memories forged in the crucible of wet and rainy weather. Our journey taught me one thing, time in the great outdoors is slowly being phased out in our society but it is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable things to do in your free time.
