On the last Saturday of the Easter holidays, I found myself walking through the green countryside in Sussex as part of my practice expedition for my Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award. Myself and a group of 5 other friends ambled tiredly, marvelling at the picturesque landscapes when we took breaks. Although challenging, the treks proved to be an appreciated change of pace from the revision and work we had been doing for the past 2 weeks.

On the first day, we started off strong. A somewhat late start from Crowborough Station due to the tardiness of the teachers was soon made up for as we excitedly hurried towards our first campsite of the 2-night expedition. Not without some hiccups and wrong turns, we managed to make it to the site before 5 o’clock: something that we were all proud of. Although it was forecasted to be gloomy and rainy, we found ourselves blessed as we were graced with nothing but the sun for the days of our expedition, though the morning dew was enough to make our boots coated in mud. After a nice dish of pasta, we went to bed. The next morning, we got off to a late start due to the lack of sleep, but we trudged on, motivated by the knowledge that our next campsite was to be quite fancy. We finally arrived and treated ourselves to some ice creams. On the final day, motivated by the thought of returning home and finishing the expedition, we pushed ourselves and made it to the station in good time. As we lay exhausted in the station parking lot as the instructors talked to us, we reflected on the experience; all of us agreeing that although it was demanding, it was definitely worth it.

It was from this experience that I realised the importance of going outdoors. Even if you aren’t participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award (which I would highly recommend doing), it’s of paramount importance to take a break once in a while and get some fresh air. Not only will you appreciate the beauty that lies in nature, but you allow yourself to relax and calm down.

This sentiment is especially important now: as the exam season approaches - and has already started for some of us - it’s increasingly important to take a step away from the stress and give yourself a break. As the weather starts to transition to be better, it makes taking a breather outside and relaxing away from the pressures of exams even easier.
