As we end April, it feels as though we’ve been stuck in winter for the past month as many of us have faced sub zero temperatures, very strong winds and perpetual rain with low pressure from the east said to be the culprit. However, spring seems to be making its return with expected temperatures of up to 20°C this week, largely contrasting last week. My first indication that it was spring occurred to me today when I came across the magnificent sight of a moorhen couple guarding their nest during my walk along the Duke of Northumberland River in Isleworth.

The common moorhen, scientific name Gallinula chloropus, is a type of rail bird that is usually found in lakes and rivers. They are distinguished by their red face shield and beak, peculiar-looking yellow lobed feet and otherwise brownish black plumage.

I had the privilege of watching the male moorhen gather twigs and leaves to help his partner build their nest as the female incubated her eggs. Their beautiful display of teamwork was really inspiring to see and I now I am especially excited to see what more beautiful sights spring has in store for us.

If you want to check on the progress on these moorhens, you can take a stroll down the Duke of Northumberland River in Isleworth and you’ll be able to spot the moorhens and their beautiful nest and perhaps, soon, some moorhen chicks too. Spring is definitely back on the rail!
